Behavioral science in action
Matt Battersby,
Vice President, Chief Behavioural Scientist Global Data and Analytics RGA
Why don’t consumers always switch to a better and cheaper product? Why do investors often follow the herd, buying high and selling low? Why do I keep thinking that this is the year Tottenham Hotspur (a football club in London) will finally win a trophy?
We all sometimes act in ways that are surprising or may seem irrational. This is certainly the case in life and health insurance where we continue to see a significant protection gap and increasing prevalence of lifestyle-related illnesses and diseases. Our behavioral science team has specialists in the “why” of life and health insurance decision-making. Our mission is simple: to help insurers create products, policies, and communications that reflect how people really think and behave rather than how we think they should think and behave. We do this by combining insights primarily from psychology, sociology, neuroscience, and economics, with advanced research methods, data science, and real-world experiments.

Introducing RGA’s new Behavioral Science Toolkit
Behavioral science is an increasingly influential field that is already improving the way life and health insurers design products, polices, and communications for their customers. Much of the focus to date has been on using behavioral science to help sell life and health insurance, and to increase the accuracy and honesty of underwriting disclosures.
Now it is time to apply behavioral science to the claims experience.
RGA’s new Behavioral Science Toolkit is available to RGA clients within the “Resources” section of the Global Claims Manual/Guide. The Behavioral Science Toolkit includes training modules, a webcast, and a podcast, which provide insights into some of the opportunities that exist to improve the claims experience for insurers and their customers.
Additional content will be added to the Behavioral Science Toolkit in the future as we continue to publish the results of RGA’s research.
